Singapore Cooperation Enterprise Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust to Collaborate in the Field of River Clean Up Programme

Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) and the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to promote and facilitate cooperation and collaboration in the field of river clean up and management. The MOU was signed between Mr. K. Phanindra Reddy, Member Secretary of CRRT, and Mr. Alphonsus Chia, Chief Executive Officer of SCE, in the presence of Mr. M K Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, Tamilnadu, India.

The Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) was formed by the Government of Tamilnadu with the mandate to restore rivers and water bodies in Chennai. The restoration, beautification and management of the Cooum River will be one of the first projects in the pipeline under the MOU.

The MOU will provide a broad framework for collaboration between CRRT and SCE to share Singapore’s experience in river clean up and rehabilitation, particularly in the areas of river sub basin restoration and management. SCE will partner with the Public Utilities Board of Singapore (PUB) and CH2M HILL, a Singapore-based company with vast experience in water and environmental management, to deliver the project.

To kick start the collaboration, the Singapore team will work with CRRT to formulate a scope of works to develop holistic, integrated and sustainable solutions for sub-basin restoration and management. The team will work with CRRT on a needs assessment and assist CRRT to develop a programme scope, sub-components and its phasing for effective outcomes and appropriate project delivery options.

Through the MOU, SCE hopes to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation between Singapore and the Government of Tamilnadu. We also hope that the discussions will pave the way for more collaboration in the river restoration efforts.
