Temasek Foundation International@10 Asia Urban Governance Leaders Forum 2017
Experts and officials across Asia gather in Singapore to discuss urban development challenges
Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry & National Development Dr Koh Poh Koon joined more than 100 senior government officials and urban development experts from over 10 countries across Asia at the launch of the Temasek Foundation International @10 Asia Urban Governance Leaders Forum 2017 today. Jointly organised by Temasek Foundation International (TF Intl) and Singapore Cooperation Enterprise
(SCE), the forum takes place from 20 to 22 July 2017. (Refer to Annex 1 for the programme).
This forum is part of a series of themed-forums held throughout 2017 by TF Intl to commemorate ten years of partnerships in building capabilities in Asia and beyond. The partnerships focus on the areas of healthcare, education, public administration, urban management and disaster-response capability. (Refer to Annex 2 for the full list of forums)
With participants from Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Viet Nam and Singapore, this forum gathers alumni of past TF Intl urban-related capability building programmes, as well as new partners to engage in dialogue and exchange ideas on urban development.
“As centres of economic activity, communication and innovation, cities are key to the development of any country or community. As urban populations continue to grow, policy-makers and city planners face challenges in ensuring their cities are sustainable and liveable. This is why urban management is one of the core areas that the Foundation supports, with strong emphasis on building capabilities in areas such as water management, housing and urban planning. We hope the participants will use this platform to share experiences and knowledge with each other, and make friends with other delegates across the region,”
said Mr Benedict Cheong, Chief Executive, Temasek Foundation International.
Distinguished speaker, Dr Liu Thai Ker, renowned Architect-Planner of Singapore, will be delivering a Keynote Address on Singapore’s urban trajectory over the last 50 years and join in a plenary session where invited speakers will discuss some of the urban development issues faced by governments in Asia, and engage in dialogue on the key trends that cities in Asia are heading towards.
As part of the mutual learning and knowledge exchange, alumni of past programmes from India, Indonesia and Myanmar will share experiences and case-studies on the urban development journeys of their cities at the forum. Since 2007, more than 3,000 Asian urban management leaders and specialists have benefitted from the programmes supported by TF Intl, which range from water and waste management, to housing and urban planning and governance.
Representatives from Singapore’s public agencies such as Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, and e-Government Leadership Centre (eGL) will also share Singapore’s experience in the areas of urban planning, water management, solid waste management and Smart Nation initiatives.
Mr Kong Wy Mun, Chief Executive Officer of SCE, said,
“SCE has been a close partner of TF Intl, having jointly implemented some 20 capacity building programmes in urban-related topics. Through these programmes supported by TF Intl, SCE has forged many close relationships with friends across the region through the exchanges of our experiences. This forum is a meaningful platform for us to commemorate the many years of partnership between SCE and TF Intl, and also to celebrate the friendships between Singapore and other countries.”

About Singapore Cooperation Enterprise
Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) is an agency formed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore in May 2006 to respond effectively to the multitude of foreign requests to tap into Singapore’s development experience. SCE works closely with Singapore’s 16 ministries and over 60 statutory boards to tailor possible solutions to match the foreign parties’ needs. SCE also serves as
the focal point of access to expertise across these public agencies. SCE’s main objective is to share Singapore’s public sector expertise to interested foreign parties which can be government agencies or non-government entities. In doing so, we aim to build long-term partnerships with foreign parties and generate business opportunities for Singapore’s private sectors. With effect from 31 August 2012, SCE was restructured as an integrated arm of IE Singapore, the government agency promoting international trade and partnering with Singapore companies in going global, to optimise the synergies between both organizations.
